29th New England 10’s July 14, 2007

July 14, 2007

The 29th Annual New England 10’s Rugby Tournament in Acton, MA was again played at a maximum capacity with 38 teams in both men’s and women’s divisions competing on four rugby pitches in beautiful NARA Park.  All 38 teams were vying to win the set of custom tournament rugby jerseys awarded to the men’s and women’s winners of the Cup Division (courtesy of sponsor Ball’s Out! Rugby).

In the morning, the 38 teams turned up the heat while competing in the round-robin matches.  In the afternoon, the top teams from the round-robin moved onto the Cup Division playoffs, while the remaining teams moved forward to compete in the Plate and Bowl Division playoffs.

Final Results

  • Cup Division Winner (Men): Mystic River RFC
  • Cup Division Winner (Women): Beantown  RFC
  • Plate Division Winner (Men): UConn Alumni
  • Bowl Division Winner (Men): Central Maine RFC
  • Bowl Division Winner (Women): Portland RFC

In the Men’s Cup Division Final, Mystic River RFC defended their tournament title by winning a defensive thriller against their Division 1 rivals the Boston Irish Wolfhounds (final score: 14-7).  Mystic made their way through the semi-finals with a win over Northeastern (final score: 19-5), while the Wolfhounds spent a great deal of blood and sweat to beat perennial contender Boston RFC in their semi-final match (final score: 5-0).

Over in the Women’s Cup Division Final, Beantown RFC beat Boston Women RFC to repeat for their 8th straight year (final score: 37-0).  In the finals, Kelly Seary (Beantown fly-half) ran the offense to perfection to help nail down her bid as the Tournament MVP and to bring home the Cup Division hardware for Beantown.  Beantown beat a tough Seacoast Women’s side in their semi-final match (final score: 32-0), while Boston overcame the ladies of Providence RFC in their semi-final match (final score: 24-6).

Congratulations to each of the Cup Division Finals winners Mystic River and Beantown.  In addition to their tournament trophies, they also brought home a set of custom New England 10’s rugby jerseys (courtesy of Ball’s Out! Rugby).

In the Men’s Plate Division Final, the UConn Alumni proved that they still have what it takes to win the big matches.  UConn beat Middlesex RFC in a very physical match (final score: 5-0).

In the Men’s Bowl Division Final the Stripers from Central Maine made their annual pilgrimage to Acton a successful one with a big win over the Brookline HS Alumni (final score: 15-12).

In the Women’s Bowl Division Final the Portland Women made it a clean sweep of the Bowl Division trophies by teams from Maine, by continuing their all-day domination and outperforming the UConn Women (final score: 14-7).

Thank you to all of the players, referees, and spectators who made the tournament a great success again this year.  A special thank you to the host team Old Gold RFC for another well run tournament, and to the tournament sponsors for their continued support: Heineken USA, Ball’s Out! Rugby, Taylor United Van Lines, Tom English’s Cottage, and Isis Boston Massage.
