Old Glory DC’s 2025 campaign ended in a 27-16 defeat to Chicago Hounds on Saturday night in

Bridgeview.

The loss marked the second consecutive year that OGDC was eliminated in the conference

semifinals, and the third straight year that Old Glory DC qualified for the Major League Rugby

postseason.

Saturday’s match began on the right foot for Old Glory — specifically, Jason Emery’s right foot,

as the center raised the flags for penalty goals in the eighth and 20th minutes to get OGDC out

to a 6-0 lead.

The Old Glory defence looked stout throughout the early stages of the match. Chicago did not

get on the board until the 30th minute, when Chris Hilsenbeck scored a penalty goal to cut the

deficit in half to 6-3.

OGDC’s response was immediate, as Emery split the sticks only three minutes later to restore a

six-point lead for the visitors. The first try of the match was scored in the 37th minute, as Peyton

Wall outran the Old Glory backs down the left flank to dot the ball down. Hilsenbeck added the

conversion, and Chicago led for the first time, 10-9.

Chicago’s bid for a halftime lead was snuffed out on the final possession of the first half. Old

Glory connected a series of passes from left to right, and John Rizzo was waiting in the corner

to receive the final offload. The winger beat the Hounds defender to the try zone to retake the

lead. Emery added two more points, and the halftime score was 16-10 in OGDC’s favor.

The back-and-forth scoring continued in the second half. A 50th-minute lineout deep in Old

Glory’s defensive territory yielded another Chicago try. Prop Charlie Abel powered through the

lines to bring Chicago back within one, and Hilsenbeck’s conversion gave Chicago the

advantage again.

Hilsenbeck added three more points in a penalty goal in the 60th minute to open Chicago’s lead

to 20-16. Old Glory responded with sustained possession, with Connor Buckley at the center of

much of the ball movement. Buckley tallied a match-high 96 passes, and sits third in MLR in that

category.

Despite the possession, Chicago was able to keep Old Glory at bay. In the 70th minute, Ignacio

Peculo barrelled in for another Chicago try that needed to go to TMO to be confirmed.

Hilsenbeck’s conversion made the score 27-16.

A late Old Glory push was stymied by turnovers and a late Facundo Gattas yellow card, and

Chicago was able to see out the rest of the clock to advance to the Eastern Conference Final.

Old Glory DC dropped their final game before postseason play, as they were defeated 50-5 by San Diego Legion on Saturday night. The defeat kept OGDC in third place in the Eastern Conference, four points ahead of Miami, who was defeated in their final game of the regular season Sunday vs. Seattle.

After both teams struggled to connect passes in the early stages of play, Legion struck first in the 16th minute. A lineout led to a maul from which Brad Wilkin broke out, and the captain dotted down the ball for the first of his match-high 15 points. Steffan Crimp added the extras to give Legion the early lead.

Four minutes later, San Diego capitalized on a yellow card to Jamason Fa’anana-Schultz, scoring a penalty try only moments after the OGDC back saw yellow. The disciplinary issues continued for Old Glory, as KoiKoi Nelligan also received a yellow card immediately after the try. Despite being reduced to 13 men, Old Glory worked the ball deep into San Diego territory, before a turnover just before the cards expired allowed Legion to exploit the extra open space for another try. A long kick upfield led to Rhian Stowers having room to operate on the right side, and one of San Diego’s newest signings made it 19-0. Crimp made it 21-0 with ease.

Just before halftime, the referee continued to go to his pocket, this time for San Diego. A TMO check spotted foul play from Zak Farrance, and the referee showed him a red card. Old Glory could not capitalize on the numerical advantage after the halftime break. Just two minutes after play restarted, Crimp extended his arm across the try line for five of his 12 points in the match. Ethan Grayson added the conversion to grow the lead to 28. Crimp would tack on a penalty goal before Old Glory managed to get themselves on the board. A dazzling series of quick offloads worked the ball to the corner, where Owen Sheehy was waiting to put the ball down for an OGDC try. John Powers left the conversion short.

A 69th minute penalty try extended the San Diego lead, and Wilkin added two more tries in the final seven minutes of the match to grow the Legion margin of victory. Wilkin’s 11 tries rank him in the top five in Major League Rugby.

The win marked the most points that Legion had scored since a Week 2 victory over Anthem, while the Old Glory defeat saw the third time in 2025 that OGDC conceded 50 points or more. Despite the loss, Old Glory won the possession battle, and will look to right the ship next week in the Eastern Conference Semifinals. OGDC will travel to Chicago next weekend to begin their charge towards the 2025 Major League Rugby Championship in Rhode Island.

Old Glory DC hosted their final regular season home match at the Maryland SoccerPlex against Rugby Football Club Los Angeles, in a high-stakes rematch of their chaotic, card-filled, high-scoring clash. This time, the stakes were even higher—RFCLA fighting to stay in the playoff hunt, while OGDC chased the dream of securing home field advantage. The match lived up to its billing in drama, but not in outcome for DC, as RFCLA came out on top in a strange, stop-start affair marred by a major power outage that left the venue without power just before halftime.

But the on-field action had no shortage of electricity.

Old Glory roared out of the gates, scoring just three minutes in. Jamason Fa’anana-Schultz powered over the line from five meters out after a bruising pick-and-go, dragging multiple defenders with him. The conversion missed wide, but DC led 5-0 early. RFCLA responded quickly—on his 50th MLR cap, Christian Dyer touched down in the corner, and the conversion gave LA a 7-5 lead by the ninth minute.

DC struck back in the 15th minute. Deep in LA territory, Jason Emery slung a looping pass wide to John Rizzo, who cruised in for a try. Emery nailed the conversion to make it 12-7. Thirteen minutes later, it was déjà vu—Emery again floated a pinpoint pass to the wing, this time to Axel Müller, who danced around one tackler to touch the ball down. OGDC extended the lead to 17-7.

Then, just after the restart, the scoreboard and speakers at the SoccerPlex sputtered and went out entirely in the 30th minute due to a local power outage, despite the skies having cleared from earlier storms. Still, the packed crowd didn’t miss a beat—feeding off the on-field intensity, they stayed loud and locked in.

MĂĽller struck again, scoring his second try to put Old Glory up 22-7 as halftime neared. But just before the break, RFCLA struck back in stoppage time with a crucial converted try to narrow the margin to 22-14.

The second half shifted sharply. RFCLA came out energized and scored two converted tries in rapid succession in the 52nd and 55th minutes to take a 28-22 lead. The momentum had clearly flipped. Still, DC wouldn’t go away. The sides exchanged scores over the next 20 minutes, with DC staying within one point but unable to retake the lead. Every time OGDC looked set to break through, LA had an answer.

In the 78th minute, RFCLA broke through one more time to stretch the lead to 38-32.

Then came the wild finish.

DC regained possession after the restart and charged into LA’s 22 for one final attack. A loose pass bounced off a DC player and hit the deck—only for an RFCLA player to scoop it up and dash the length of the field for a heartbreaking try. Instead of potentially winning or salvaging two bonus points, OGDC was left with a stinging 43-32 defeat and just one point to show for it.

Despite the loss, Old Glory DC remains in contention for a home playoff match. They now travel west for their regular season finale against the San Diego Legion. A win—and a little help from around the league—could still secure them a coveted home playoff match.

Don’t miss the action—tune in at 10:00p.m. ET next Saturday as DC faces the defending Western Conference champs with everything on the line.

Old Glory DC outlasted Eastern Conference leaders New England Free Jacks with a 20-17

win in Quincy Saturday evening.

The win stretched OGDC’s longest win streak of the season to four consecutive victories

and moved Old Glory only two points off the conference lead.

The hosts led possession early in the rematch of last year’s conference semifinals. After

New England thought they had scored only seven minutes in, the Free Jacks try was

reversed after video review found obstruction.

In the 14th minute, Cam Nordli-Kelemeti won a 50-50 ball and raced forward into Old Glory

territory. A series of offloads within the OGDC 22 found Wian Conradie in enough space to

dot it down for a counterattacking try. Dan Hollinshead added the conversion.

Free Jacks had a chance to add on eight minutes later, but Hollinshead missed a penalty

kick wide right to keep the score 7-0.

Old Glory pounced on the error with less than five minutes left in the first half. A quick

series of passes worked the ball to the perimeter, where winger Axel Muller was there to

score his second try in as many weeks.

Jason Emery, fresh off from his nomination to the Week 14 Major League Rugby First XV,

split the sticks from a sharp angle and tied the match at 7-7. While that was the halftime

score, Old Glory knew they would be at a disadvantage after the interval after a late yellow

card was issued to Tevita Naqali.

After holding 58% of the first-half possession, New England wasted no time capitalizing on

their second-half numerical advantage. New England won another aerial contest, and

Paula Balekana showed off his speed down the wing to score the second Free Jacks try in

just the first minute after the break.

It was Balekana’s 10th try of the season, placing him second in MLR. Hollinshead’s

conversion attempt rang off the inside of the post, and the New England advantage

remained at 12-7.

Old Glory found a response only three minutes later. Jason Emery smashed a penalty kick

through from over 40 meters away to cut the deficit to 12-10.

Only four minutes later, OGDC found their first lead. Cory Daniel made a shoestring catch

to keep an Old Glory move alive. His offload found Connor Buckley, who navigated his waythrough the New England backs for a try. Emery continued his strong kicking game, and the

Old Glory advantage was 17-10.

Only five minutes later, Jed Melvin caught a Le Roux Malan offload to dot it down and tie the

match at 17. Hollinshead would again send his conversion attempt wide.

In the 64th minute, Emery would add on to his match-high 10 points. A penalty kick gave Old

Glory the lead back, 20-17, with 15 minutes to protect the advantage.

OGDC displayed a resilient defense to hold off the late New England charge and finished

off the victory.

Old Glory will look to continue their win streak at the MD SoccerPlex on Saturday vs.

RFCLA.

Old Glory DC turned up the heat this week in a high-stakes Eastern Conference clash against Anthem Rugby Carolina — a rematch of their Week 4 battle. With just three games left in the regular season, a win would significantly boost DC’s playoff chances. Anthem, still chasing their first-ever MLR victory, were hungry, but OGDC showed up with intent and firepower.

Old Glory struck first just eight minutes in. After sustained early pressure, Cory Daniel powered through off a maul to notch the opening try. The conversion drifted wide, but DC had the early 5–0 lead. Anthem responded shortly after with some end-to-end action, eventually punching it in under the posts to go up 7–5 by the first-half water break.

DC answered back with authority. In the 23rd minute, a misfired Anthem lineout turned into a quick counterattack. Damien Hoyland sliced through the line, then twisted around defenders to score a brilliant solo try. Jason Emery nailed the conversion to reclaim the lead at 12–7. Just minutes later, Anthem was reduced to 14 men after a dangerous tackle, and DC capitalized immediately. Steffan Hughes broke the line and fed scrumhalf Connor Buckley, who dashed in for another try. Emery added the extras, extending the lead to 19–7.

Just when it looked like the half might end there, Old Glory struck one more time deep into stoppage time. With the ball kept alive through sharp offloads, Tommaso Boni flicked a slick pass to Axel Muller, who dotted it down just inside the corner flag. The halftime whistle blew with OGDC firmly in control — 24–7 — and the bonus point already secured.

Anthem came out swinging after the break, scoring in the 50th minute off short-range pick-and-goes to narrow the gap to 24–14. It was a potential turning point — but DC shut the door. A scrum penalty at midfield gave OGDC a platform, and Emery once again kicked to the corner. Though the maul stalled, the forwards recycled the ball quickly. Buckley scanned wide and flung a pinpoint pass to Perry Humphreys, who finished it in the corner to push the lead to 29–14.

Momentum firmly back in DC’s hands, they kept up the pressure. In the 67th minute, KoiKoi Nelligan powered over from close range to make it 34–14. Then, in the 74th, Ignacio Dotti delivered the final blow. After sharp handling from Hughes and Humphreys, Humphreys was tackled and popped the ball to an on-rushing Dotti who crashed over to seal the deal at 41–14. Anthem managed a late consolation try, but it wasn’t enough. Final score: Old Glory DC 41, Anthem RC 19.

This week’s story? Relentless pressure and ruthless execution. Old Glory strung together their third straight win — a first this season — and surged into second place in the Eastern Conference standings.

Up next: a massive road test against the defending MLR champions and Eastern Conference leaders, the New England Free Jacks. Kickoff is set for Saturday, May 24th at 5pm ET.

A run of 24 consecutive points lifted Old Glory DC to a crucial 27-14 win over NOLA GOLD in Fairfax on Tuesday night.

The win, which included a four-try bonus point, vaults OGDC to third in the Eastern Conference Standings with four matches left to play.

Tuesday’s game saw both teams struggle early to adjust to the slick conditions the rainy evening provided. Each team had lineouts deep in opposition territory, but turnovers and penalties stymied both teams’ chances.

It wasn’t until the 23rd minute when Jason Emery’s penalty kick broke the scoreless deadlock and put Old Glory DC up 3-0, capping off a possession that included a critical OGDC scrum.

Only two minutes later, NOLA’s Luke Carty missed a penalty kick of his own, but a 26th minute penalty try gave the GOLD their first lead. Only six minutes later, crisp ball movement led to Julian Roberts turning on the jets and scoring again for NOLA. Carty’s conversion, from nearly the same spot as the missed penalty, was successful this time, and NOLA built their lead to 14-3.

The end of the first half saw substantial Old Glory possession. After a NOLA yellow card in the shadow of their own try zone, Facundo Gattis lowered his shoulder and powered in for the first try of OGDC’s night, only three minutes before the halftime whistle. Emery’s conversion missed, and the hosts went to the break down 14-8.

Despite trailing on the scoreboard at halftime, the signs for an Old Glory comeback were certainly foreshadowed in the first 40 minutes – OGDC led the possession battle 59-41, and the territorial battle 58-42.

Just after halftime, Old Glory capitalized on their statistical advantages. In just the 42nd minute, an incisive run put OGDC on the precipice of the try zone, and Cory Daniel put the ball down for a score. Emery’s successful conversion restored Old Glory’s lead, which they wouldn’t relinquish the rest of the night.

NOLA had another opportunity to retake the advantage, but Carty’s second penalty kick miss gave possession back to Old Glory. OGDC made the most of it, and a clever offload from Gattis to Nick Grigg gave the hosts another try. After Emery’s conversion, the scoreboard read 22-14.

Gattis, who led the match with 10 points, got his second try in the 68th minute, converting on a lineout to extend the OGDC lead further and clinch the critical bonus point in the Eastern Conference standings. Although Emery couldn’t secure the conversion, the lead was 27-14.

Scrum-half Connor Buckley continued to play a pivotal role facilitating the Old Glory attack. His match-high 51 passes takes him into 5th in MLR in that category.

OGDC’s stingy late defense proved enough to hold off the visitors’ comeback bid. A late try attempt by NOLA was disallowed after review, and the hosts secured their sixth victory of 2025.

Old Glory will look for their third consecutive win on Sunday when they travel to Charlotte to face Anthem RC.

Old Glory DC came into the weekend needing a statement win—and they delivered. After dropping three straight, OGDC faced a fatigued Utah Warriors squad playing their third match in just eight days. With playoff pressure mounting in a crowded Eastern Conference, Old Glory responded with a wire-to-wire performance, dispatching Utah 28-12 in front of a fired-up home crowd.

Jason Emery opened the scoring in the fifth minute, slotting a penalty kick from just outside the 22 after Utah’s first scrum infringement—a theme that would continue all night. Moments later, OGDC struck again. Off a sharp scrum move, Damien Hoyland drew in the defense and offloaded to Perry Humphreys who broke a tackle and finished in the corner, pushing the lead to 8-0 by the 12th minute.

Old Glory dictated possession and tempo, consistently forcing Utah to defend deep in their own half. After a sustained period of pressure and a kick to the corner, the forwards went to work. A powerful maul followed by a series of tight pick-and-go carries ended with Tevita Naqali slamming the ball down for another DC try.

With Utah reeling and a yellow card reducing them to 14 men, OGDC continued to pile on. After hammering away in the red zone, Old Glory finally broke through with a sweeping counterattack. Utah kicked out of their own end and DC shifted the ball to the opposite side of the field. Crisp inside-outside passing opened space for John Rizzo on the edge, who finished expertly to push the lead to 20-0 before halftime.

DC kept their foot on the gas early in the second half. Crowd favorite Jamason Fa’anana-Schultz powered over from close range after a Utah penalty at the five-meter mark, securing the bonus-point try and stretching the lead to 25-0.

Utah found some life with two tries in the middle of the half, but the outcome was never in doubt. Emery added another penalty in the 70th minute to ice the match, sealing a much-needed 28-12 victory for OGDC.

The story of the night? Pressure and consistency. Old Glory never let Utah settle into the match, applying relentless defensive heat and dominating at the scrum. It was the kind of complete performance that could reignite DC’s playoff push.

Next up: a crucial midweek showdown with Eastern Conference rival NOLA Gold. With playoff spots on the line, every point counts. The match kicks off Tuesday, May 13th at 6 p.m. ET at George Mason University Stadium as part of Old Glory’s Military Appreciation Night. Don’t miss one of the final home matches of the regular season—come out and support the squad!

Old Glory DC dropped their third consecutive match as the Western Conference-leading Houston SaberCats rode a dominant first half to a 48-27 victory on Saturday night.

For the second consecutive match, OGDC gained an immediate lead in the first two minutes. A Jason Emery penalty goal in the first minute gave the center the first of his 12 points. After Houston fly half AJ Alatimu equalized with a penalty goal of his own, OGDC’s Martin Vaca utilized a quick tap and went low on his defender to notch the match’s first try. Emery added the conversion to put the visitors up 10-3.

It would be OGDC’s final lead. Eight minutes later, Houston responded as Alatimu placed a perfectly-weighted kick for Tautalatasi Tasi, who raced past the DC backs to fall on the ball first and secure the try. Alatimu’s conversion once again knotted the match, this time at 10 apiece.

That began the decisive first-half run of 24 unanswered Houston points. The SaberCats took their first lead on captain Nathan Den Hoedt’s try in the 21st minute. Only five minutes later, the lock would find the try zone again and double his team’s advantage, utilizing a friendly Houston bounce for a diving grounding. Alatimu’s conversions, four of his match-high 17 points, made it 24-10. A 32nd minute penalty goal added to Houston’s advantage, and the SaberCats led 27-10 at the interval.

On a night that saw temperatures in the 80s, Houston wore down the visitors over the 80 minutes. The SaberCats led the territory battle throughout the night, and carried the ball over 100 meters more than Old Glory.

Despite the halftime deficit, OGDC continued to battle back. A strong passage of play led by a John Rizzo run led to a penalty goal, which Emery scored to cut the deficit to 27-13.

Only eight minutes after the visitors got closer, Jeremy Misailegalu intercepted an OGDC pass attempt and started a rapid SaberCat attack, nearly going try zone-to-try zone before offloading to Alatimu for a try and a 19-point edge with 25 minutes to play.

Lautaro Bavaro’s deft footwork off a scrum got Old Glory closer yet again, and Emery’s conversion narrowed the DC side’s deficit to 32-20. Immediately off the kickoff, though, the Old Glory momentum was stymied again. Alatimu’s kick allowed Dominic Akina to show off his pace for just his third try of the season.

With just over 10 minutes left, Houston tacked on a penalty goal, and former 2nd-overall MLR Draft selection Max Schumacher finished off a Houston set piece to grow the lead to 25 points.

A consolation try in the final four minutes from former SaberCat Jamason Fa’Anana-Schultz cut the deficit, but Old Glory came up one try short of a bonus point in the Eastern Conference race. The match’s final moment, a Houston penalty goal, gave the SaberCats their largest point total of the season.

Old Glory will look to battle back next Sunday vs. Utah at 2:00 ET at MD SoccerPlex.

After a grueling 16-match regular season, each conference will seed its top four teams in a single elimination tournament beginning on June 14 with the winners squaring off for the revered MLR Shield. All 2025 playoff matches, including the 2025 MLR Championship, will be broadcast on ESPN2 and ESPN+.

During last season’s action-packed MLR Championship match, the New England Free Jacks captured a second-straight MLR Shield, beating the Seattle Seawolves, 20-11, in front of a record-setting crowd of 12,085 in San Diego.

“It’s another season of growth and opportunity for Major League Rugby, and we’re thrilled to bring that energy and excitement to one of the best new sports venues in the U.S.,” said Nic Benson, Commissioner of MLR. “The team in Rhode Island has built a remarkable stadium that is going to host some incredible events in the coming years, and we’re excited that the MLR Championship will be the first major sporting event to take the field at Centreville Bank Stadium. We can’t wait to host die-hard rugby fans and welcome in sports fans from across New England to what promises to be another thrilling MLR Championship.”

Pawtucket recently finished construction on the state-of-the-art, 100 percent electric, 10,500-seat stadium, serving as the home of the United Soccer League’s (USL) Rhode Island FC. Nestled along the scenic Seekonk River, the stadium is the flagship destination for sports and entertainment in the Ocean State, hosting other sporting and community events and concerts year-round.

“One of the founding visions behind building Centreville Bank Stadium was to bring world-class events to Rhode Island—sports and entertainment  that unite communities, energize fans, and showcase our state on a national stage,” said Brett M. Johnson, Founder and Chairman of Rhode Island FC, and Centreville Bank Stadium.  “Hosting the Major League Rugby Championship is a powerful validation of our vision, of the world-class quality of our stadium and of our commitment to Rhode Island.”

Having opened in May, the MLR Championship will be the first major sporting event to be held at Centreville Bank Stadium.
