WASHINGTON, D.C. (July 7, 2023) – Old Glory DC is proud to announce that Simon Cross has been named its new Head Coach.  Cross will lead Old Glory’s coaching staff from the 2024 through the 2026 Major League Rugby seasons.  Cross will succeed former Head Coach Josh Syms, who led Old Glory to its first MLR playoff appearance and playoff win in 2023.

A Scottish national, Cross comes with a distinguished resume as both a coach and player, having most recently served since 2018 as Defense Coach for the Dragons in the United Rugby Championship, contested by professional teams from Wales, Scotland, Ireland, Italy, and South Africa (formerly the Pro14 competition).

Prior to his Dragons role, Cross coached at both professional and international levels, including assignments with the English Premiership club Worcester Warriors as well as the Scotland U18 and U20 sides.  As a player, Cross represented the Premiership club Wasps for three years before becoming a fixture at Edinburgh Rugby from 2003 through 2010 and being named to the Scotland 7’s team in 2007.

“It only took a few conversations with the owners for me to believe D.C. is the right opportunity for me to take on this kind of challenge,” said Cross.  “The organization’s culture and commitment to growing the game in the U.S., the core of players they have assembled, the strong coaching they’ve had so far, and the facilities and resources invested in the team all set the foundation for success.  At the same time, I’ve studied many of their games this year, visited training, and attended one game live, and I have a clear sense of where I can contribute.”

“Simon’s history is as a defensive coach,” observed Old Glory’s chairman, Chris Dunlavey, adding: “They say offense may catch the fans’ attention, but it’s defense that wins championships.  Simon’s level of experience, knowledge of the game, and network throughout the rugby world make it clear he can lead us to success in MLR.”

Added co-owner Paul Sheehy:  “Simon has an outstanding breadth of experience and an excellent sense of where Old Glory is today and where we need to go. We are excited to start the Simon Cross Era.”

Cross, a father of two boys, was also attracted by the prospects of moving his family to the Greater Washington area but also, in a way, returning to the Scottish Rugby fold through the involvement of the Scottish Rugby Union in Old Glory’s ownership.  Said Cross, “In visiting D.C., I got a chance to review not only the team but the city and a number of parts of the area, and the family and I are greatly looking forward to the new adventure of living, working, going to school, and playing sports here.”

OG Nation –

This Fourth of July, as we celebrate the birth of our nation, it seems an opportune time for all of us who support Old Glory rugby to pause for a moment and reflect on the remarkable journey we have been embarked upon together.  The 2023 season has truly been one for the history books, filled with thrilling moments and significant milestones – all made possible by your unwavering support and the passion you have shown for our team.

First and foremost, this year marked the first time in Old Glory’s history that we made the MLR playoffs.  It is a testament to the hard work, dedication, and talent of our players, coaches, and staff that we were successful in achieving this goal.  We are immensely proud of having reached it and, more broadly, the progress we have made as a club.

In fact, we not only reached the playoffs but, to the delight of us all, OG took a step further and secured our first playoff win, propelling us into the Eastern Conference final.  This was a monumental milestone for Old Glory, showcasing our potential and determination to compete at the highest level in North American rugby.

It is clearly in order that we extend our deepest gratitude to Head Coach Josh Syms, whose leadership, energy, and unwavering dedication have been instrumental in our progress.  Though only here for one year, Josh had a tremendous impact on our team, our culture, and the entire organization.  He is worthy of the highest accolade we know in rugby: he is leaving the Old Glory shield in a better place than he found it.  We wish Josh the very best with his next assignment coaching for Zebre in the URC and expect that he will remain a part of the OG family in spirit, if not in physical presence.

Of course, none of this progress would be possible without the commitment and hard work of our incredible players. They have shown tremendous heart and determination on the field, embodying the spirit of Old Glory and the values of rugby.  We salute their unwavering dedication and passion for the game.

Above all, we must acknowledge the tremendous support of our fans – most particularly those who followed us to New York and New England. We believe we are now headed in the direction of having the best “traveling” team in MLR, and it is all thanks to you.  The energy you bring to each game, whether home or away – your initiative, your creativity, your passion, your volume, your spirit of fun — is truly inspiring, and we are humbled by your loyalty.  We will continue to strive to make you proud.

And yet, while we celebrate our achievements today, we must all recognize that we have not yet reached our final goals.  Our ambition to be the very best, on and off the field, is unbounded. There is still much work to be done, and we are committed to putting in the necessary effort to build upon our success. We are confident that with the continued support of our fans and the talent within our organization, we will achieve even greater things in the seasons to come.

To that end, please keep an eye out for a series of major announcements in the coming weeks.  We have forged new partnerships to advance our organization and identified more leaders to contribute to our future.  You will see that we have addressed our coaching leadership for 2024 and beyond, that we are strengthening our roster to build on the solid core of players we have developed, and that we are investing in our business and rugby infrastructure – all to help us reach new heights. We are grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with these new partners and are excited about the future we will build together.

All we ask of you is that you continue to be the ambassadors of the game that you have shown yourselves to be.  Help us by renewing season tickets, coming out for the games in 2024, bringing along your friends and other newcomers to the sport, and showing your spirit.

On this Fourth of July, let us celebrate the progress we have made as a team, as a community, and as a nation. Old Glory embodies the fighting spirit of America, and together, we will continue to raise our standards, exceed expectations, and pursue greatness.

Thank you for your unwavering support, and here’s to a bright future for Old Glory!

WASHINGTON, D.C., June 13, 2023 — Old Glory DC Rugby Football Club of Major League Rugby is pleased to announce that Washington Nationals minority owner Paxton Baker, multi-Grammy Award winner Verdine White, and leading investment manager Pablo Calderini are joining the club as investors. All three have taken minority-ownership stakes in Old Glory DC.

Baker brings decades of experience in entertainment, event production, and professional sports investment to the club. Prior to investing in professional sports, Baker was President of BET Event Productions and General Manager of Centric and BET Digital Networks, a subsidiary of Viacom, Inc., for nearly two decades, producing top festivals, award shows, and concerts around the world. A Washington Nationals owner since 2006, Baker was also part owner of the Washington Kastles World Team Tennis and the 2021 National Women’s Soccer League champions, the Washington Spirit.  Mr. Baker has one championship ring for each of the three teams. Internationally, he is also a minority owner of the NBA Africa League’s Cape Town Tigers.

Regarding his investment in Old Glory DC, Baker said, “The power and importance of live sports in the media landscape is undeniable. Sports also have the power to bring people and communities together.  I love the Washington, D.C. market and recognize its importance as the nation’s capital, but it is also the community where I have spent the last 30 years of my life and care about deeply. There is always something special in uniting your community and the home team to experience the magic of a live event.”

Verdine White, founding member of the immortal supergroup Earth, Wind & Fire, is following his friend Baker’s lead in buying a minority stake in the team.  A winner of eight Grammys over four decades and a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, White is one of Rolling Stone’s 50 greatest bass players of all time and a supporter of music education in underserved communities through his nonprofit Verdine White Performing Arts Center in Los Angeles. He is making his first investment in professional sports.

“Washington has always been an important market for Earth, Wind & Fire,” said Verdine White. “We have always sold out in the Washington, D.C., market at every point of our career. It’s a pleasure to invest in a community that has supported us with such great enthusiasm over so many years.”

Pablo E. Calderini is the President and Chief Investment Officer of Graham Capital Management and is responsible for the management and oversight of the discretionary and systematic trading businesses at GCM. Calderini is also a member of the firm’s Executive, Investment, Risk, and Compliance committees. He joined GCM in August 2010. Prior to joining GCM, Mr. Calderini worked at Deutsche Bank from June 1997 to July 2010 where he managed several business platforms including Equity Proprietary Trading, Emerging Markets, and Credit Derivatives. Calderini received a B.A. in Economics from Universidad Nacional de Rosario in 1987 and a Masters in Economics from Universidad del CEMA in 1989, each in Argentina.

Old Glory DC, the representative of the greater Washington DC metropolitan area in Major League Rugby, was founded in 2018 by life-long D.C. area residents, business leaders, and rugby players Chris Dunlavey and Paul Sheehy. The Scottish Rugby Union joined the partnership in 2019, establishing Scottish Rugby as the only Tier One national governing body in rugby to have linked with an MLR club. Since its inaugural season in 2018, MLR has grown from seven to 13 teams, featuring 12 from the United States and one from Canada.  Currently, Old Glory has just clinched the first playoff appearance in its history, looking to chase the MLR championship in the 2023 postseason.

“Since our founding, Old Glory has been looking for opportunities to broaden our ownership group with partners who bring not only capital but real strategic value to our group,” said Old Glory’s Chairman, Chris Dunlavey.  “At this point in our development, we could hardly do better than to include partners of this stature from the fields of sports, entertainment, and finance.”
