Join Old Glory DC and the United States Rugby Foundation at the Lost Afternoon Luncheon in Washington, DC, at the Mayflower Hotel on Friday, October 22nd.

Enjoy an afternoon of socializing with old friends, teammates, and new acquaintances from throughout the world of rugby, the day before the US Men’s Eagles host the New Zealand All Blacks at FedExField.

Here is the official itinerary for the Lost Afternoon Luncheon:

Friday, October 22nd

Reception: 11:00 am – 12:00 pm

Lunch: 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm

Program: 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm onward

As with past Lost Afternoon Luncheons, there’ll be a stellar group of speakers. This year’s lineup includes:

  • US Eagles Men’s National Team head coach Gary Gold
  • Major League Rugby Commissioner George Killebrew
  • Former United States Eagles captain Blaine Scully
  • Director of the North America Youth Rugby Referee Program Ken Fraine
  • Former Old Glory DC and Rugby World Cup Champion South African Springbok, Tendai “Beast” Mtawarira.

Why is it called the Lost Afternoon Luncheon? It’s called the “Lost Afternoon” for obvious reasons: once you get together with new and old mates in such an atmosphere, the typical 90-minute luncheon can turn into three hours – or more – so you might as well stick around and fully enjoy the experience! The extended time also allows attendees to hear from multiple speakers and still have plenty of time to network.  It’s not unusual for guests to even book rooms or suites in the host hotel to continue well into the evening, especially those traveling from out-of-town.

One of the Lost Afternoon Luncheon traditions is the raffle and silent auctions of some great autographed rugby and baseball memorabilia. This year is no exception. Among the items being raffled off are:

  • USA replica jerseys autographed by: the Eagles team to face the All Blacks; the men’s and women’s US Olympic teams; and current and past US players.
  • New Zealand All Blacks replica jerseys autographed by many of the current All Blacks on this tour and past All Blacks including, Ma’a Nonu, Kieran Read, Richie McCaw, 2002 All Blacks Team, and the 2005 All Blacks Grand Slam Team.
  • Baseballs autographed by some of Major League Baseball’s biggest stars, including Clayton Kershaw, Miguel Cabrera, Kris Bryant, Buster Posey, and Fernando Tatis, Jr.
  • In addition, a custom-made jersey signed by all of the victorious Rugby World Cup-winning captains will be on the auction block.

Help spread the word by telling your friends and teammates that the Lost Afternoon Luncheon is the place to be on Test Match Weekend!

Army-Navy Collegiate Men’s Rugby Match Added to Historic 1874 Cup - USA Rugby v. New Zealand All Blacks in Washington, DC on Saturday, October 23, at FedExField

Washington, DC (September 23, 2012) – One of the country’s most spirited and respected rivalries will take center stage when the Army Black Knights of West Point face the U.S. Naval Academy Midshipmen in men’s collegiate rugby at 1:00 pm EDT on Saturday, Oct. 23 at FedExField. Event promoter Left Field Live announced today that the interservice Army-Navy match will serve as a preliminary competition prior to the 1874 Cup featuring the Team USA Eagles vs. New Zealand All Blacks match set for 3:00 pm EDT.

“We’re thrilled and grateful to be a part of this historic event in a phenomenal venue. We also very much appreciate the opportunity to share the fierce Army-Navy rivalry with a broader rugby fan base in an event that will attract global attention,” said Matt Sherman, Army Head Coach

“We’re very excited to face Army as part of the 1874 Cup celebrations. FedExField in our nation’s capital is a fitting venue for the Cadets of West Point and the Midshipmen of Annapolis to square off against each other in another round of our fiercely contested rivalry,” explained Gavin Hickie, Navy’s Director of Rugby. “We want to offer our deepest thanks to the Washington Football Team, Events DC, Left Field Live along with the USA Eagles and New Zealand All Blacks for working so hard to make this special event happen. Go Navy, Beat Army.”

No matter the sport, the venue in which it’s played or each team’s records, the Army-Navy rivalry always embodies the best of competition by displaying mutual respect and honor that helps provide a great experience for fans on each side.  Both teams are undefeated this fall with Army boasting wins over Queens of Charlotte and Notre Dame (Ohio), while Navy has defeated Air Force and St. Bonaventure.

Looking ahead to a busy fall with qualification for the 2023 France Rugby World Cup as a prime objective, the United States are excited to be hosting  New Zealand as they lead the effort to bring the Rugby World Cup to the United States in 2027 or 2031 for the men and 2029 for the women.

Meanwhile the legendary All Blacks are making their debut in the nation’s capital and first visit back to the States since 2016.
