WASHINGTON, D.C., June 13, 2023 — Old Glory DC Rugby Football Club of Major League Rugby is pleased to announce that Washington Nationals minority owner Paxton Baker, multi-Grammy Award winner Verdine White, and leading investment manager Pablo Calderini are joining the club as investors. All three have taken minority-ownership stakes in Old Glory DC.

Baker brings decades of experience in entertainment, event production, and professional sports investment to the club. Prior to investing in professional sports, Baker was President of BET Event Productions and General Manager of Centric and BET Digital Networks, a subsidiary of Viacom, Inc., for nearly two decades, producing top festivals, award shows, and concerts around the world. A Washington Nationals owner since 2006, Baker was also part owner of the Washington Kastles World Team Tennis and the 2021 National Women’s Soccer League champions, the Washington Spirit.  Mr. Baker has one championship ring for each of the three teams. Internationally, he is also a minority owner of the NBA Africa League’s Cape Town Tigers.

Regarding his investment in Old Glory DC, Baker said, “The power and importance of live sports in the media landscape is undeniable. Sports also have the power to bring people and communities together.  I love the Washington, D.C. market and recognize its importance as the nation’s capital, but it is also the community where I have spent the last 30 years of my life and care about deeply. There is always something special in uniting your community and the home team to experience the magic of a live event.”

Verdine White, founding member of the immortal supergroup Earth, Wind & Fire, is following his friend Baker’s lead in buying a minority stake in the team.  A winner of eight Grammys over four decades and a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, White is one of Rolling Stone’s 50 greatest bass players of all time and a supporter of music education in underserved communities through his nonprofit Verdine White Performing Arts Center in Los Angeles. He is making his first investment in professional sports.

“Washington has always been an important market for Earth, Wind & Fire,” said Verdine White. “We have always sold out in the Washington, D.C., market at every point of our career. It’s a pleasure to invest in a community that has supported us with such great enthusiasm over so many years.”

Pablo E. Calderini is the President and Chief Investment Officer of Graham Capital Management and is responsible for the management and oversight of the discretionary and systematic trading businesses at GCM. Calderini is also a member of the firm’s Executive, Investment, Risk, and Compliance committees. He joined GCM in August 2010. Prior to joining GCM, Mr. Calderini worked at Deutsche Bank from June 1997 to July 2010 where he managed several business platforms including Equity Proprietary Trading, Emerging Markets, and Credit Derivatives. Calderini received a B.A. in Economics from Universidad Nacional de Rosario in 1987 and a Masters in Economics from Universidad del CEMA in 1989, each in Argentina.

Old Glory DC, the representative of the greater Washington DC metropolitan area in Major League Rugby, was founded in 2018 by life-long D.C. area residents, business leaders, and rugby players Chris Dunlavey and Paul Sheehy. The Scottish Rugby Union joined the partnership in 2019, establishing Scottish Rugby as the only Tier One national governing body in rugby to have linked with an MLR club. Since its inaugural season in 2018, MLR has grown from seven to 13 teams, featuring 12 from the United States and one from Canada.  Currently, Old Glory has just clinched the first playoff appearance in its history, looking to chase the MLR championship in the 2023 postseason.

“Since our founding, Old Glory has been looking for opportunities to broaden our ownership group with partners who bring not only capital but real strategic value to our group,” said Old Glory’s Chairman, Chris Dunlavey.  “At this point in our development, we could hardly do better than to include partners of this stature from the fields of sports, entertainment, and finance.”

Last month, Old Glory DC and Clonakilty Distillery announced the winner of the Clonakilty Golden Ticket Legacy Bottle Raffle, which will send the winner on a trip for two to Cork, Ireland, to visit the Clonakilty Distillery. The winner is Brian George, a Virginia Tech rugby alumnus and Northern Virginia resident.  Brian attributes his luck in winning the prize to his rugby teammate and late friend, Paul. In fact, Brian wouldn’t have purchased the Clonakilty bottle at all if it weren’t for Paul.

“My friend Paul went to all the rugby games with me – we always go to Old Glory games together – he talked me into buying a bottle and I bought it. He could always talk me into something, and he talked me into buying that bottle of whiskey. And then I turn around and asked him, ‘will you buy one?’ and he goes ‘Well, no. You bought one.’”

Brian and Paul met at Virginia Tech in 1981, and like most rugby relationships, their friendship continued off the field and long after they graduated. “We’re both local studs in our mind,” joked Brian.

Very sadly, during the off-season, Paul passed away, and Brian knew immediately what to do with the bottle. “I ended up saving the bottle for his wake at Bearclaw. As many as I could round up, we ended up doing a little toast to him. 20 people or so took a small sip of the whiskey and it went very quick.”

Brian reflected that the whiskey was great, although he didn’t get much of it. “I’m a casual whiskey drinker. I’m pretty simple – mostly a beer guy.”

When Old Glory drew Brian’s name during the team’s International Match on February 26, he felt he had received one last gift from his friend Paul.

“It was pretty cool, you know? Maybe Paul was looking down and won the trip on his bottle.”

Clonakilty Distillery will welcome Brian and his wife to Cork, Ireland in the next few months as a part of the grand prize.

“I’m most looking forward to getting my wife to Ireland, to be honest,” said Brian. “She’s 98% Irish and she’s never been. I’ve always wanted to see it. I’ve seen England before, but we don’t travel a lot. It will be really nice to get her overseas.”

Congratulations and Sláinte Brian George!

WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 6, 2022) – As an extension of the friendship between Tokyo and D.C., symbolized by the cherry blossom trees originally gifted to the U.S. from Japan in 1912, Old Glory DC launches a city-themed matchday top, inspired by D.C.’s iconic Cherry Blossoms, in partnership with the Embassy of Japan. Old Glory DC representatives will present Embassy of Japan Spokesperson Masashi Mizobuchi with a limited edition rugby matchday top inspired by the Cherry Blossoms at the Tidal Basin Thursday, April 14, to celebrate the global friendship and camaraderie within the rugby community.

In March of 1912, 3,020 cherry trees arrived in Washington, DC, as a gift of friendship to the People of the United States from the People of Japan. Every spring, the annual blossoming of the Cherry trees in Washington, DC, signifies an official start of springtime in the nation’s capital and a reminder of the friendship between Japan and the United States. The limited-edition matchday top, inspired by D.C.’s iconic Cherry Blossoms, is a part of a larger city-themed campaign organized by Major League Rugby. The matchday top features a white base color, a cherry blossom print along the shoulders, arms, front, and back of the top, the flag of Washington, DC, and a pop of blue with red blossom outlines on the sides.

“Japan connected with the world through this wonderful sport during the 2019 Rugby World Cup, just as Japan and the U.S. are connected through the cherry blossoms at the Tidal Basin,” said Embassy Spokesperson Masashi Mizobuchi. “This year we are celebrating the 110th Anniversary of the gift of cherry blossom trees from Tokyo to Washington, D.C., and we are excited to partner with Old Glory DC to celebrate Japan-U.S. friendship and the Japanese community in the D.C. area.”

The matchday top will be worn during home matches in April and will make its on-field debut during the team’s Friday Night Lights theme on April 15 vs Utah Warriors. Additionally, Old Glory DC will welcome Embassy of Japan’s Ambassador Tamaki Tsukanda and Spokesperson Masashi Mizobuchi to Segra Field to deliver the match ball to referees prior to kickoff. On Saturday, April 23, Old Glory DC will auction off the limited-edition tops to the public after the match, with funds going to Asian Americans Advancing Justice (AAJC), a non-profit organization whose mission is to advance civil and human rights for Asian Americans and to build and promote a fair and equitable society for all.

Japan has had significant contributions to the global rugby community in recent decades. As hosts of the most recent Rugby World Cup in 2019, EY reported that the 44-day event “was the most economically successful Rugby World Cup ever, with nearly £4.3 billion generated in economic output.” Additionally, EY concluded that 2.25 million people were introduced to rugby in Asia due to the event. A separate Nielsen Sports report documented that Rugby World Cup interest almost doubled from 26% in 2018 to 44% in 2019, representing more than 50 million people. The Springboks ultimately took the Webb Ellis Cup in Yokohama, Japan, to cap off one of the most popular international sports events, filled with unforgettable moments on and off the field, unparalleled hospitality by the people of Japan, and the most competitive rugby ever seen.

“It surprises some people that Japan has become known as a great rugby nation,” said Old Glory co-owner Chris Dunlavey. “But their performance in international competition has earned worldwide respect, and by all accounts, the Rugby World Cup they hosted was among the best ever. There are many lessons rugby in the U.S. can learn from Japan.”

On June 11, 2021, USA Rugby formally accepted a bid candidacy to host an upcoming Rugby World Cup 2027, 2029 and 2031. Washington, DC has been identified as a competitive host city since the announcement of the 1874 Cup, which invited New Zealand All Blacks to Washington, DC to face USA Rugby’s Men’s XV in an international test match on Saturday, October 23, 2021, at FedExField. Alongside Events DC and the Washington Commanders, Old Glory DC was the official rugby host of both the USA Eagles and the infamous All Blacks. The marquee event welcomed 39,720 fans to FedExField to experience a rare match against the most successful rugby team in the world.

“As the official convention and sports authority for the District of Columbia, Events DC shares in the excitement of this partnership between Old

Glory DC and Japan, symbolizing the cultural connection between our nations,” said Ralph Morton, senior vice president and managing director, sports & entertainment division at Events DC. “Washington, DC is home to a passionate and robust rugby community, and dynamic international partnerships like this strengthen DC’s position to continue to attract and host major global rugby matches and events, including the Rugby World Cup.”

View the limited-edition Cherry Blossom match day tops in person and join Old Glory DC at Segra Field on Friday, April 15, and Saturday, April 23 by purchasing tickets at Ticketmaster.com.

Old Glory DC and Mount St. Mary’s University announce a partnership for the 2022 Major League Rugby season. This relationship will offer leadership opportunities for Mount St. Mary’s students to ensure graduates are fully prepared for working in their chosen industries.

With this partnership, Mount St. Mary’s University will be Old Glory DC’s official partner in higher education, and Old Glory DC will provide several internship placement opportunities each year to support students with their studies.

“The Mount has long-established reputations for both academic excellence and as a collegiate rugby power,” observed Old Glory Chairman Chris Dunlavey. “A partnership like this, where we can align with the institution to pursue its mission and work together to grow rugby in our region—it’s perfect.”

Located in Emmitsburg, Maryland, Mount St. Mary’s University is a private, liberal arts Catholic university dedicated to inspiring students with a passion for learning to become ethical leaders who lead lives of significance in service to their community.

Robert Brennan, Vice President for University Advancement, stated “rugby has been one of our most successful sports at the Mount since 1973.  We now have generations of alumni who support our rugby program and our student-athletes on and off the pitch.”  Brennan added, “our partnership with Old Glory will allow us to ‘export the goodness’ of our Mount Rugby program to players, families, and rugby fans in the DMV and throughout the country. We could not be more optimistic as we enter into this partnership and we look forward to mutually beneficial results for the Mount and Old Glory.”

John Nauright, dean of the Richard J. Bolte, Sr. School of Business and Director of the Global Rugby Leadership Institute, believes that rugby is the ideal sport to lean on when it comes to career development.  “Rugby is a game that builds trust, leadership, teamwork, and great decision-making skills,” said Dean John Nauright. “All of those aspects are something that can really translate to career success, and one of those things we are really trying to connect is the values of rugby to leadership skills that can help people in their future careers no matter what that may be.”  Looking ahead, Nauright also mentions that this partnership will lay the foundation for excellent development for rugby at the highest levels in the Mid-Atlantic.

“I’m hoping that we will achieve tremendous growth for rugby in the region and awareness that Washington, DC, and the surrounding areas are a real hub for US rugby, particularly as we build up for likely hosts for the 2029 Women’s Rugby World Cup and 2031 Men’s Rugby World Cup,” said Nauright. “With this partnership, we hope to raise awareness of rugby, build performance pathways from youth to college to professional, and embed ourselves effectively within our region through community programs.”

The Mount St. Mary’s men’s rugby team, established in 1973, won the 2016 National Small College Rugby Organization (NSCRO) National Championship. The team, led by Director of Rugby and Head Coach Jay Myles, now play in the Division I Chesapeake Collegiate Rugby Conference.  Myles commented, “the professional setting Old Glory provides will enhance our student athletes’ growth and prepare them for success.  We are excited for the opportunities the partnership will create.”

Join Old Glory DC and the United States Rugby Foundation at the Lost Afternoon Luncheon in Washington, DC, at the Mayflower Hotel on Friday, October 22nd.

Enjoy an afternoon of socializing with old friends, teammates, and new acquaintances from throughout the world of rugby, the day before the US Men’s Eagles host the New Zealand All Blacks at FedExField.

Here is the official itinerary for the Lost Afternoon Luncheon:

Friday, October 22nd

Reception: 11:00 am – 12:00 pm

Lunch: 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm

Program: 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm onward

As with past Lost Afternoon Luncheons, there’ll be a stellar group of speakers. This year’s lineup includes:

  • US Eagles Men’s National Team head coach Gary Gold
  • Major League Rugby Commissioner George Killebrew
  • Former United States Eagles captain Blaine Scully
  • Director of the North America Youth Rugby Referee Program Ken Fraine
  • Former Old Glory DC and Rugby World Cup Champion South African Springbok, Tendai “Beast” Mtawarira.

Why is it called the Lost Afternoon Luncheon? It’s called the “Lost Afternoon” for obvious reasons: once you get together with new and old mates in such an atmosphere, the typical 90-minute luncheon can turn into three hours – or more – so you might as well stick around and fully enjoy the experience! The extended time also allows attendees to hear from multiple speakers and still have plenty of time to network.  It’s not unusual for guests to even book rooms or suites in the host hotel to continue well into the evening, especially those traveling from out-of-town.

One of the Lost Afternoon Luncheon traditions is the raffle and silent auctions of some great autographed rugby and baseball memorabilia. This year is no exception. Among the items being raffled off are:

  • USA replica jerseys autographed by: the Eagles team to face the All Blacks; the men’s and women’s US Olympic teams; and current and past US players.
  • New Zealand All Blacks replica jerseys autographed by many of the current All Blacks on this tour and past All Blacks including, Ma’a Nonu, Kieran Read, Richie McCaw, 2002 All Blacks Team, and the 2005 All Blacks Grand Slam Team.
  • Baseballs autographed by some of Major League Baseball’s biggest stars, including Clayton Kershaw, Miguel Cabrera, Kris Bryant, Buster Posey, and Fernando Tatis, Jr.
  • In addition, a custom-made jersey signed by all of the victorious Rugby World Cup-winning captains will be on the auction block.

Help spread the word by telling your friends and teammates that the Lost Afternoon Luncheon is the place to be on Test Match Weekend!

Transgender Athletes and Allyship Panel Discussion

On July 6th, Old Glory DC hosted a panel discussion on Transgender Athletes and Allyship within Sports and Rugby with Changing the Game for local coaches and administrators.

Thank you all again for joining us for last night’s informative, impactful, and inspiring conversation about including trans kids in sports, the documentary film Changing the Game, and what we can all do to make sports safer and more accepting for all athletes. Big thanks again to our panelists Chris Mosier, Grace McKenzie, Mack Beggs, and our moderator Shane Diamond.

Some themes that bear repeating:

  • If you enjoyed our conversation or learned something new, encourage three friends to watch the film and then chat with them about it. If you feel so moved, post about it on Instagram or Twitter. The more people who see this film, the better.
  • From AP News: Lawmakers can’t cite local examples of trans girls in sports
  • From the Center for American Progress: The Importance of Sports Participation for Transgender Youth, including this quote: “Where transgender youth encounter accepting and affirming policies and peers, including transgender-affirming sports policies, their risk of poor mental health and suicidality decreases—and where these supports are lacking, risk is substantially higher.”
  • Katie Barnes’ ESPN cover story about Layshia Clarendon. Really powerful read about identity, family, and the lifesaving power of sports and basketball.
  • Stay involved with policy changes with USA Rugby here. Find out who is responsible for creating or updating policies in your league or area and contact them; the more we can let policymakers know that trans people belong in sport, the more policies will reflect that call to action.

More information about studies and articles mentioned during the panel can be found at changinggamedoc.com/resources. We’ve also attached Athlete Ally’s Pride Night in a Box and encourage you to reach out to Anne Lieberman, Director of Policy and Programs at anne.lieberman@athleteally.org to learn more about creating and hosting successful Pride Nights.

On behalf of Changing the Game, Old Glory DC, and Major League Rugby, thank you all for taking the first steps to leave an invisible legacy of transgender inclusion in your communities. And remember, your love and acceptance has power, don’t be afraid to use it.
