Youth Rugby

Starting this spring Old Gold RFC will help coach the brand new Newton South High School Rugby Football Club, with the goal of competing in the New England Rugby Football Union’s U-19 Division II in the fall of 2010. Old Gold RFC is excited to foster the growing interest in rugby union in the Boston area and to help develop the next generation of American rugby players.

Old Gold RFC is committed to making Boston a great place for rugby at all ages, and if you need help with a youth or U-19 rugby club in the Boston area, Old Gold RFC wants to help. If you want to start a rugby club in your area, USA Rugby has a page that will tell you how under the “High School Rugby” menu on its website.

According to USA Sevens Rugby, rugby union is the fastest-growing sport in U.S. high schools, with more than 20% per year growth in the last 5 years.

USA Rugby’s vision for leading rugby union in the United States into 2011 is:

“To make rugby a legitimate high school sport opportunity for all athletes by providing a great experience on and off the field, and by gaining recognition in high school and college administrations through growth in numbers of participants and an enhanced rugby brand.” (

In the past, Old Gold RFC was one of a number of Boston-based rugby union clubs that joined forces with the Boston Centers for Youth and Families (BCYF) to start a Youth Rugby Program in Boston during the summer. (Youth Rugby details are now posted on the Boston Youth Rugby website.)
